Bath Baby Guide for New Mums
Bathing is a special bonding time for both baby and mum. Here is a bath baby guide to make this process easy and fun.
Before Bath Time:
• Gather all the needed materials in one place so you do not have to get something partway through the bath.
• Check the water temperature to make sure that is between 32°C and 37°C.
o Use a thermometer or your elbow to test the water.
• Make sure that all water faucets and handles are covered and out of your baby’s reach.
• Do not overfill the tub.
Bath Items:
• Soap and shampoo specially formulated for a baby
• Cotton balls or cotton buds to clean the face
• Bath toys suitable for your baby’s age
• Terry face cloth
• Baby towel (hooded is helpful)
• Clean nappy
• Baby lotion or oil for a massage
Bath Safety:
• Be sure to test the water temperature before putting your baby in the bathtub.
• Have the tub already filled before placing your baby inside.
• Do not run water whilst your baby is in the tub in case of sudden temperature changes.
• Never leave your baby in the bathtub alone.
• Always support your baby’s head and neck with one hand.
• Babies whose umbilical cord has not yet fallen off only need sponge baths.
How to Bathe:
• Smile as you talk to your baby, explaining each step of the bathing process.
• Use cotton buds or a cotton ball to clean the area around the eyes, ears, and nose.
• Use baby soap and a washcloth to clean the skin.
• Thoroughly rinse all of the soap off of your baby’s skin.
• Pat your baby’s skin dry with a soft towel.
• Use a baby lotion or mild oil to give your baby a gentle massage.
• Keep the towel wrapped around your baby until you have dressed him or her.
Remember that bathing is a special time. Do not rush through the process or see it as one more thing to accomplish. Take time to enjoy these bonding moments with your baby.
